Certified PersonalWhat is the NASM-CPT, exactly? It’s a certification that lets you become a personal trainer.
It comes from NASM (the National Academy of Sports Medicine), a name trusted since 1987. It’s checked and approved by the NCCA, an independent group that makes sure certifications are legit, the same way they check healthcare credentials.
In Canada, you sign up through NPTA™, but your certificate comes straight from NASM.
Is The One People TrustSince 1987, NASM has trained more than 1.9 million trainers around the world. That’s a lot of trust, earned over a long time.
Here’s why people pick it:
It’s accredited. The NCCA checks it, so you know it’s real.
It’s science-based. Experts make sure what you learn actually works.
Employers know it. Gyms and pro sports teams (yes, even the NFL and NBA) hire NASM-certified trainers.
People rate it 4.9 stars. And 86% of new trainers say they felt ready to work with real clients right away.
In Canada, NPTA™ is how you get this certification. You get the same NASM training, plus a local team that’s here to help you every step of the way.
This is the training method behind everything you’ll learn. It has five simple steps that help you build safe, effective workouts for any client, beginner or advanced. It’s practical, not just theory, so you feel ready from day one.
Anyone. Really.
We’ve had 17-year-olds just out of high school. We’ve had 52-year-olds leaving totally different careers, nursing, finance, you name it. Everyone learns the same material, takes the same exam, and earns the same certificate.
All you need is to be 18 or older, have a high school diploma (or equivalent), and hold a current CPR/AED certification.
If you’re ready for a new start, this is where it begins.

Go through the material online, the OPT Model, exercise science, working with clients. Most people finish in 3 to 6 months.
03
Choose the proctored exam or the non-proctored one. We explain the difference below.
04
Once you're certified, you don't stop at theory. NPTA™'s Apprenticeship Program, built on our 10 Pillars™ Framework, gets you working with real clients right away. Real people. Real sessions. Real experience, not classroom simulations
05
Apply to a gym, start your own coaching business, or work independently. You'll have your certificate, real experience, and an advisor/mentor who's still there to help.
We want you to feel confident, not caught off guard. Here’s what matters most
Timeline
That is how long you get to finish your coursework and take your exam. If something comes up, talk to your advisor as early as possible.
Important
Every student gets an exam voucher, but there are two types, and it's important to choose carefully. Both are administered by NASM and both lead to the same NASM-CPT credential.
Default Recommendation
The standard option included with every CPT course. It is NCCA-accredited and the format most employers recognize, which is why it's our default recommendation.
Optional Route
It covers the same material and holds the same standard of rigor, but it is administered without a live proctor and is not NCCA-accredited. If you prefer this route, email us.
Renew Every 2 Years
Passing your exam earns your certification. Renewing it every two years keeps it active and up to date.
Here's how it works: your certification lasts 2 years from the day you pass. To renew, you'll complete 2.0 Continuing Education Credits (CECs) and pay a small renewal fee before your certification expires. Our Student Success Team handles the whole process with you.
Fitness science keeps growing and changing. Renewing your certification means you’re always up to date and it shows clients and employers that you take your work seriously.
You can use your renewal to learn even more, like nutrition coaching or performance training. These extra specializations can help you earn more and stand out. NPTA™ offers all of these directly, as NASM's official partner here in Canada.
Your CPT certificate is just the beginning. Here’s where people take it from there.

NASM + NPTA™
NASM Gives You the Certificate. NPTA™ Helps You Build a Career.
NASM creates and owns this certification, it’s respected everywhere. In Canada, NPTA™ is the only official way to get it. That means a local Canadian team, who understands the Canadian job market and can answer your questions along the way.
NPTA™ also offers something extra: the 10 Pillars™ Framework. It’s ten real-world skills, like talking to clients and building your own business, that you’ll practice with actual clients, not just in a classroom.
Pricing is updated regularly to reflect current promotions and payment options, so we keep it in one place, click "See Pricing" above for today's rate and any payment plans available.
It lasts 2 years from the day you pass your exam. To renew, complete 2.0 CECs and pay the renewal fee before it expires. Our team handles the process with you.
Share details about your shipping policies, item returns, or customer serviceIt's no longer active, which could affect your job if your gym requires a current certification. If it lapses, you'll need to go through reinstatement instead of a simple renewal, so it helps to track your expiry date and start early.
180 days from when you enroll, that covers both your coursework and your exam when redeemed. Most people finish in 3 to 6 months.
The proctored exam has 120 questions and takes 2 hours. It's NCCA-accredited and already set up for you. The non-proctored exam has 100 questions and takes 3 hours and it’s open book. It's not NCCA-accredited, and you have to email us to request it before redeeming your keys.
No, once you activate an exam in your account, that choice is final. If you're not sure, email us first.
No experience needed. Our students range from teenagers to people in their 50s changing careers. You just need to be 18 or older, have a high school diploma, and hold a current CPR/AED certification.
The numbers speak for themselves: 1.9 million+ trainers certified worldwide, more than any other provider. Every NFL, NBA, and MLS team employs NASM-certified coaches. In 2025 alone, 19,338 people passed the exam. 86% of graduates felt ready to work right away. And it holds a 4.9-star rating, without asking for reviews. It's a reputation that's been earned, not bought.
Because it means you're supported by a local team who understands the Canadian job market, not a call center overseas. Your certificate still comes fully from NASM. NPTA™ just makes sure you have real support, real experience, and real help finding work here at home.
Finish your certification and apprenticeship hours, and we'll actively help you land your first role or keep working with you until you do. Ask your advisor for full details on how it works. If you don’t find a job within 90 days, we’ll refund 5% of your enrollment fee from your Apprenticeship Program.
