This pathway provides the framework to manage the entire athlete lifecycle, from early development to elite-level recovery.

Curriculum

YOUTH EXERCISE SPECIALIZATION (YES) OVERVIEW:

There are no prerequisites for this course. Although the course is primarily intended for personal trainers, fitness coaches, nutrition coaches and other fitness/health professionals, there is no requirement that you be one to take the course.

Chapter 1: Rationale for Youth Fitness Training
This chapter will provide a better understanding of the different terms that identify the youth population, the difference between overweight and obesity, and be able to describe why so many youths are overweight.

Chapter 2: Anatomical and Physiological Considerations for Youth
Understand the key physiological differences between children, adolescents, and adults.

Chapter 3: Psychological Considerations for Youth
Self-perceptions and self-belief help the youth be successful in a fitness program. Provide young clients with tools and strategies to help better adapt activities and habits in pursuance of a fitness goals.

Chapter 4: Fitness Assessment for Youth
Be able to recognize the expectations for health and fitness professionals. Understand the special considerations for test administration in youth.

Chapter 5: Youth Flexibility Guidelines
Understand and provide general exercise guidelines and various flexibility options for youth.

Chapter 6: Cardiorespiratory Training for Youth
Understand and develop general cardiorespiratory training guidelines and programs for youth.

Chapter 7: Core and Balance Training Guidelines for Youth
Determine the appropriate core and balance exercise programs that are safe, effective, and fun for youth based on the OPT™ Model.

Chapter 8: Plyometric, Speed, Agility, and Quickness Training for Youth
Understand the importance of plyometric and speed, agility, and quickness training (SAQ) for youth. Determine appropriate exercises to incorporate into a youth programs based on the OPT™ Model.

Chapter 9: Resistance Training for Youth
Design and implement a safe, effective, and progressive resistance training program for youth, as well as eliminate myths about the safety of youth engaging in resistance training.

Chapter 10: Integrated Program Design for Youth Clients
Be able to define cardiorespiratory stage training, the principles behind each stage, and how each stage fits into the OPT™ Model.

Chapter 11: Nutrition for Youth
Recognize the current trends of youth eating habits while understanding the effects of obesity on their population. Understand nutrition recommendations and basic fluid intake guidelines for youth.

Chapter 12: Professional Development
Understand the legal and ethical responsibilities related to a health and fitness professional working with youth.

Final Exam
After the completion of the course, you will take an online final exam from the comfort of your own home, or wherever you prefer to take tests. The exam has 60 questions with a time limit of 90 minutes. To pass, you need a score of 70% or higher. Don’t fret though, if you score below that, you have up to 3 attempts to pass.

PERFORMANCE ENHANCEMENT SPECIALIZATION (PES) OVERVIEW:

Prerequisites
Although it is not required, it is recommended that candidates have at least one of the following credentials:

NASM-CPT certification

  • Certified Sports Nutrition Coach
  • Certified Massage Therapist
  • NCCA, NBFE or DETC Accredited Health/Fitness Certification
  • 4-Year College Degree
  • REPs Level 3 or higher (int'l)

Chapter 1: Integrated Training EssentialsThe student will be able to identify the principles of integrated training and explain the components, scientific rationale, and evidence.

Chapter 2: Science of Human MovementIdentify key biomechanical terminology and topics, and explain functional anatomy as it relates to integrated sports performance training.

Chapter 3: Testing in Sports PerformanceDescribe the components and function of an integrated sports performance assessment, and identify methods for determining athlete readiness to perform.

Chapter 4: Flexibility Training ConceptsExplain the scientific rationale for the use of an integrated flexibility-training program.

Chapter 5: Metabolic Energy System TrainingDifferentiate between aerobic and anaerobic energy systems and describe the importance of the role of the metabolic energy system training in improving sports performance.

Chapter 6: Core Training ConceptExplain the importance of the core musculature and its relationship to performance enhancement.

Chapter 7: Balance Training ConceptsDescribe the role of balance training in improving sports performance and injury prevention.

Chapter 8: Plyometric Training ConceptsDescribe plyometric techniques and their purpose in performance enhancement and injury prevention.

Chapter 9: Speed, Agility, and Quickness TrainingUnderstand speed, agility, and quickness (SAQ) techniques and their purpose in performance enhancement and injury prevention.

Chapter 10: Resistance Training ConceptsDescribe the role of resistance training in improving sports performance and identify the stages of the General Adaptation Syndrome.

Chapter 11: The Science of Periodization of the OPT™ ModelIdentify the acute training variables within the Optimum Performance Training® (OPT™) model.

Chapter 12: Olympic Lifting for Performance EnhancementExplain the rationale for the use of the Olympic lifts in improving performance.

Chapter 13: Injury Prevention for the AthleteIdentify strategies for injury prevention and common injuries related to physical activity.

Chapter 14: Performance NutritionExplain the limits of nutritional advice under the scope of practice, and describe pre- and post-exercise nutrition strategies.

Chapter 15: Ergogenic AidsIdentify common substances used to enhance performance, ergogenic foods, and analyze ethical and legal issues related to the use of ergogenic aids.

Chapter 16: Psychology in Sports PerformanceExplain performance psychology and its role in achieving athletic excellence

After the completion of the course, you will take an online final exam from the comfort of your own home, or wherever you prefer to take tests, that consists of 100 questions. Each question will be multiple-choice. The exam is timed and cannot exceed 90 minutes. To pass, you need a score of 70% or higher. Don’t fret though, if you score below that, you have up to 3 attempts to pass.

STRETCH AND FLEXIBILITY (SFC) OVERVIEW:

Section 1: Foundations of Flexibility & Mobility
Understand the difference between flexibility and mobility, and how both impact movement, performance, and injury prevention.

Section 2: Anatomy of Stretching
Learn how muscles, joints, and connective tissues respond to stretching, including neuromuscular mechanisms and range of motion.

Section 3: Types of Stretching Techniques
Explore static, dynamic, active, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) stretching and when to apply each method.

Section 4: Assessments for Flexibility & Movement
Identify limitations in mobility and flexibility through simple assessments to guide effective programming.

Section 5: Program Design for Flexibility Improvement
Create structured stretching programs tailored for different goals such as recovery, performance, and injury prevention.

Section 6: Corrective Stretching Strategies
Apply targeted flexibility techniques to address common tightness and movement restrictions in key muscle groups.

Section 7: Integration into Training & Recovery
Learn how to incorporate flexibility training into warm-ups, cooldowns, and recovery routines for optimal results.

Section 8: Coaching Techniques & Client Application
Develop the skills to coach clients safely, improve adherence, and deliver effective flexibility sessions for all fitness levels.
